Say it ain't so!! ..... The superhero in his latest flick is no longer fighting for "Truth, Justice, and the American Way". The screenwriters deliberately left out the "American Way" reference, because they thought that the phrase was loaded and ambiguous. Apparently "the American Way" no longer means the same thing it did in the 40's and 50's according to these Bozo's.
"So, you play the movie in a foreign country, and you say, 'What does he stand for? -- truth, justice and the American way.' I think a lot of people's opinions of what the American way means outside of this country are different from what the line actually means (in Superman lore) because they are not the same anymore," Harris says. "And (using that line) would taint the meaning of what he is saying."
Too bad they decided to release the movie right before the 4th of July, the most American of all holidays.
I've read a couple of reviews that have panned the writing and acting in "Superman Returns", and this put's the "nail in the coffin" for any desire on my part to see this movie. I'm a product of the 50's and I watched Superman on TV as a youngster and read the comic books and watched the movies, because I liked what Superman stood for -- "Truth, Justice, and the American Way".
I guess the Big Guy better get a passport from the U.N. and turn in his membership card to the "Justice League of America"!!
